Project Details
Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation), was established in July 2000 to regulate and maintain the supply of electricity and water for the population of Qatar. Kahramaa is the sole transmission and distribution system owner and operator for the electricity and water sector in Qatar.
The extensive developments underway across the State of Qatar create surging demand for potable water production. Such a fast-growing demand on potable water, as well as emergency potable water, can only be fulfilled through the implementation of water desalination projects. Kahramaa, therefore, planned the construction of a desalination plant at Qatar Economic Zone 3 (QEZ3) south of Al-Wakrah Municipality.
Constructed in the form of an Independent Power & Water Plant (IPWP), the desalination plant has a capacity of 130 million imperial gallons per day.
Kahramaa simultaneously implemented a transmission pipeline to convey water from the desalination plant to identified interconnection points of the Kahramaa central distribution system and Reservoir & Pumping Station (RPS) system. They also laid two parallel desalinated water transmission pipelines (each 1,600mm in diameter) interconnected, on a one-to-one basis, to two water delivery points extending from the pumping station of the desalination plant.
From 2016 to 2017, work was carried out to protect the aforementioned 1,600mm buried water transmission pipeline (approximately 71km long) associated with the Qatar Economic Zone 3 (QEZ3) Desalination Plant.
Contractors Sinohydro Group Ltd used Premier Coatings Ltd’s Premcote 1500™ Tape System to protect this buried ductile iron water pipeline, based on 20 plus years of successful applications of the same Premier system throughout the GCC countries.
After cleaning the pipeline, a coating of Premcote™ Primer was applied followed (when dry) by an overlap of Premcote 1500 Tape, completing the system in accordance with the client’s specification.

One of three rolling rigs in use for this project - used to apply Premcote 1500™ Tape

When applying the wrapping tape using a rolling rig, the contractors need to stop the tape wrapping at approx. 350mm from the spigot end of the pipe and typically 250mm from the socket end of the pipe to accommodate for the machine rollers

The Premcote 1500™ Tape System protected pipelengths are laid out prior to installation on-site
